Aside from preparing designs and applying for planning permission, a crucial and overlooked part of an architect's service is making site inspections during construction. This way we can ensure contractors are following our drawings and specifications exactly (both of which are part of a project's 'contract documents'). This ensures our clients are getting what they've paid for. Such inspections also allow us to help contractors to deal with unanticipated conditions or work - an inevitable part of working with existing, often very old, buildings.
